Ingredients

  • 1 bottle red wine, (malbec, syrah or any red blend work well)
  • 2 cups raw apple cider
  • 2 oranges, (1 optional for garnish)
  • 1 apple
  • 8 whole cloves
  • 2-3 cinnamon sticks, (plus more for garnish – optional)
  • 4 whole star anise, (plus more for garnish – optional)
  • 1-2 tbsp maple syrup, (optional)
  • 1/4 cup Heritage distilling Brown Sugar Bourbon, (vodka works too)

Instructions

For the stovetop:

  • Slice one orange into rounds, discard end pieces. Slice apple into rounds, discard end pieces and remove core.

  • Place all ingredients (except optional garnish items) into a pot on the stovetop. Heat at medium-high heat until the liquid just barely starts to simmer then immediately reduce heat to low. Don’t allow the liquid to boil, you just want a low heat to marry the flavors.Cover and let the wine simmer for at least 15 minutes or up to 3 hours.

  • While the wine is simmering, prepare additional orange for garnish (optional). Slice orange into wedges or simply use a strip of orange peel for garnish.

  • Pour wine through a strainer into cups for serving. Garnish with any optional items and enjoy!

For the slow-cooker:

  • Follow step #1 above.

  • Place all ingredients (except optional garnish items) into the slow cooker. Cover and cook on low heat for 1 hour. After one hour you can keep the slow cooker going on low or “keep warm” if it has that function.

  • Follow steps 3-4 above for serving.

FAQs

What wine is good for mulled wine? ›

The best wine for mulled wine is dry and full-bodied, like Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Zinfandel, or Syrah. These will stand up to the other flavors and ensure the spiced wine won't be too sweet. Use Whole Spices. I don't recommend ground spices, as they will float on top of the wine and not incorporate properly.

Can you use regular wine for mulled wine? ›

Red wines are traditionally used to make mulled wine, and while any red wine can work, sweet reds will give you a nice, sweet base, meaning less sugar added in later. If you use a dry red, keep in mind you may need to add more sugar than a recipe calls for.

Ainsley Harriott recommends mulling wines in a slow cooker and says two hours at low temperature gives excellent results and should retain most alcohol content.

Can I use Cabernet Sauvignon for mulled wine? ›

While you'll find many different types of mulled wine recipes, the basic ingredients will always be the same. I used a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon here but any red wine would work really, like a Merlot or even a Zinfandel. I also added a bit of citrus to mine and it was just delicious.

Can I use bourbon instead of brandy in mulled wine? ›

Liquor: add some extra “warmth” with brandy or bourbon. This also deepens the flavor in the mulled wine, but it's optional! Citrus: we like to add a sliced orange to the mulled wine for a lovely citrus addition. It makes a beautiful garnish, too.

Does mulling wine burn off the alcohol? ›

Does the alcohol cook out when making mulled wine? In short, yes, some of the alcohol burns off when boiling mulled wine, but you should only be gently bringing up to the boil and simmering for around 15-30 minutes which isn't enough time to completely remove all alcohol traces.

How long does homemade mulled wine last? ›
